This book was given to Mike because it reminded a nice Texas couple of him in his travels for the Lord, and I can see why! Like Mike, Corrie ten Boom is very candid about her experiences and how the Lord pulls through even when we heir apparents have flesh apparent! Too, this book is far and away more than a travel journal and is another great exercise in watching the life-out-of-death syndrome unfold! For instance, when the reader reviews his own life and walk in the Lord and reflects upon those few people to whom love is not extended—in other words, the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit is blocked from flowing—for this reason and that reason, it is cathartic to read Ms. ten Boom’s testimony to a bitter man left legless from the war’s bombing as she explains how the Lord will, Will, WILL cleanse a believer of any bitterness, hate, and unforgiveness as the person repents and receives the Lord’s love for enemies. This is all done in the context of her enumeration of the sins of the man she hated for so long, the man who had tricked and betrayed her family, resulting in their arrest and her father’s and sister’s dying in cruel prison camps, though their only crime had been the desire to save lives from the madness of extermination. Hurray for the testimony of one who went before and found God’s promises faithful in extreme circumstances! In Revelation 12:10 and 11 we are encouraged with this: “And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death.’” What a great word to encourage us to feed on the testimonies of brothers and sisters who have gone before us and to be sure we have and proclaim testimonies of God’s power in our own lives! Example: Excerpts from Corrie’s conversations in the chapter, “Music From Broken Chords” “What I have to say is of no importance. Let me tell you what the Son of God had to say. ‘For if you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses’ (see Matt. 6:14-15). If we forgive other people, our hearts are made fit to receive forgiveness.” “When I confessed [deep hatred for a man], not only did Jesus take it away, He filled me with love—even the ability to love my enemy . . . After the war, when that man was sentenced to death, I corresponded with him, and God used me to show him the way of salvation before he was executed.” “Just this month I has a sad experience with friends who behaved like enemies. They promised something but did not keep their promise. In fact, they took great advantage of me. However, I surrendered my bitterness to the Lord, asked forgiveness and He took it away . . . just the next night . . . I awoke and my heart was filled with bitterness again. I thought, How could my dear friend behave as she did? Again I brought it to the Lord. He filled my heart with His love. But the next night it came back again. I was so discouraged. God had used me often to help people to love their enemies, and I could always give my testimony about what He had done in my life; but now I felt defeated. Then I remembered Ephesians 6:10-20 where Paul describes the ‘armor of God.’ He said that even after you have come to a standstill, still stand your ground. I was at a standstill, so I decided to stand my ground and the bitterness and resentment fell away before me. Corrie ten Boom without the Lord Jesus cannot be victorious. I need the Lord every moment. And I have learned that I am absolutely dependent on Him. Because of this He has made me rich.” Pros: This is one heartfelt journal of high and low points in one pilgrim’s wanderings for the Lord. She likes to teach Spiritual truths through encounters and experiences she has had, and this, of course, makes for interesting and easy reading. She is just as apt to announce her own shortcomings as anyone else’s. I like how someone such as Ms. Ten Boom–who has faced the reality of her death for an extended period—does not mince words as she proclaims the greatness and sufficiency of the Savior who kept her. Cons: [rating:3.5/5]
