He did it for love.

We are into the third day and begin our devotions with a question. Why did the God of love kill so many in the Old Testament? The answer is hard to believe, because we have been so indoctrinated by humanism, but the answer is quite simple: love. He did it for love. How can God’s actions not be consistent with His love? Everything He does is an expression of His character. If there were an option better than love, God would have taken it. I personally have seen those given over to sin to the point that death would have been a welcomed relief. Once the heart is revealed and there is no desire for repentance, each day remaining in sin only adds to the judgment to come. Would it not be gracious to take this life and stop the sin? God’s goal is to stop sin, for it is unnatural and makes man miserable. He can stop our misery by having us turn to Him, and He could also stop our misery by taking our earthly life. We must ask ourselves an important question. What is the purpose of life if it is lived in sin? Is a life lived in sin really life? Love, love, love, God is love.

I John 1:22, “Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ?” Every believer must be prepared for the day when they are accused of being a false teacher or a cult leader. It has happened to me. I have started nearly every conference with the admonition that everything I say is not true. I am a man in process and make mistakes. However, the one thing I always will say in a conference that is truth is that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. As Ray says, “I know what I am saying, but I am never sure of what people are hearing.” Sometimes I say the wrong thing, sometimes I am wrong, and other times I am misunderstood. However, there are those with an agenda to discredit the message of abiding in Christ moment by moment by discrediting me. Each word written or uttered is examined to confirm a pre-established bias. These believers, like Saul, want to stir up the crowd, have them lay their robes at their feet, and stone any who don’t agree with them 100%. They throw around words such as cult, false teacher, and heretic. Honestly, that is a bit harsh an assessment of one who teaches there is nothing but Jesus that matters. I have often said to those who are looking for something with which to discredit me that if they will simply sit down with me, I would give them a list. I have been negative, I have not always abided in Christ, I have walked in the flesh, I have judged, I have been bitter, I have not walked in love, and the list goes on. But then again, knowing my own frailty is why there is no record of my ever trying to get anyone to follow me. My emphasis is consistently to follow Jesus. Well, amen, false judgments must come, and some with a vengeance.

There is a purpose in being judged falsely.

When someone you love is falsely accused, just respond by talking about Jesus.

What am I to do? First, I must see God in it. David looked at the man on the hill cursing and spitting and refused to allow the man to be harmed, because he wondered if God had not allowed it for a purpose. There is a purpose in being judged falsely. Again, I want to be able to love enemies, but I don’t want any enemies. I want to learn to bless those that curse me without ever having to be cursed. I want to rise above distraction and follow Jesus, but I never want the distractions. Just as Judas delivered up Jesus, and from that treacherous act Life was given to man, so God sends us our own Judas, who in ignorance delivers us up in order that we might discover that the Jesus within is greater than the slander without. If I am not preaching Christ crucified, then in all honesty I want God to remove me from the lives of others. But if I am preaching Christ, I will let God deal with the detractor on the hill. Second, I cannot allow the judgments of the carnal to become my focus. This is the most demonic side of accusations, that a hitherto unknown person might actually steal our focus away from Jesus. In a worse case scenario, assuming what is being said is true, health would come from a glance back to Jesus, not a prolonged look at and dialogue with the detractor. Therefore, when I am attacked, don’t be surprised if I go silent and start talking all the more about Jesus. I don’t want to waste time defending myself. All that we have done at ALMI has been in the open. To win the alliance of an accuser is not a victory! By attacking me and making me his focus, the accuser proves that he doesn’t agree with the message of keeping our focus on Jesus. Third, this is where those who love me come in. They can help by not defending me to anyone. I am God’s servant, so send those who accuse to the Master of the servant. The servant is not greater than the Master; the Master is all that matters. We defend the preaching of Jesus, always. We defend the messenger, never. When we start defending someone we love, our flesh is stirred, our focus moves from Jesus, our peace departs, and our accuser has accomplished the goal of the Accuser of the Brethren. This is the most difficult thing for me; I can stand to be slandered, but I can’t stand seeing those I love slandered. It is important that we do not defend men, for it is always a trap the enemy has set. When someone you love is falsely accused, just respond by talking about Jesus. Our goal is Jesus. Remember, a detractor’s job is to detract you from Jesus to a lesser issue. Fourth and finally, I want to have compassion for those who make false judgments. I have done it myself. I have gotten everything wrong. Having this in my past, I can say with complete confidence that I would rather be the one being judged than the one doing the judging. The one being judged can come away sweet, but the one involved with judging will always go away depleted and under the judgment of God.

We are given everything pertaining to life and godliness in Christ Jesus the day we believe in Him.

Matthew 13: 54, He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57And they took offense at Him.

We question where people are from—their qualifications–so we can discount them. We question God for the same reason, though even in heaven they do not know where He is from. The questions have only the goal of discounting. It is crucial that we not know where He has come from.

The topic of qualifications has come up more than once in my life, normally in one of two forms. Either someone is attempting to position himself above me in spiritual competition or he is wanting to discount what I say. The competition is obviously counterproductive, for once a person feigns spiritual authority over another, he proves that he has none. When qualifications are used to discount the teaching, question after question is asked until that end is achieved in the person’s mind. The funny thing is that the majority of Bible schools and seminaries could be sued for false advertising; their brochures promise what cannot be delivered, for only Jesus Himself can create in a person what they lay claim to be doing through education. Also, there is the problem of wisdom. It is so disheartening to one who has spent so much time in school and trusts in his knowledge to have an abiding brother or sister without such systematic instruction say something that drills the heart. This causes jealousy and resentment among the educated ones who rely on the training of their flesh. We are given everything pertaining to life and godliness in Christ Jesus the day we believe in Him. There is no more qualifying to be done. In fact, if I am being required to qualify for a Christian, I know I am with a carnal man, and I just leave.

Pride is blindness, and only Jesus can break that.

Philippians 3:13-14, “Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
You may not hear it in the places you travel, but I have heard it so many times I actually find myself finishing people’s sentences for them. They don’t believe in Christianity because of the Crusades, something a pastor once did, the behavior of the television evangelist, or the behavior of some denomination. They have examples of abuse by Christians, past, present, and future, that exclude them from having to question their own life and allow them to discount Jesus and every positive example of a believer. Make a list and put in the left column those things Christians have done wrong and in the right column the contributions of believers. From talking on the phone, to turning on the lights, to getting vaccinations, to women’s and children’s rights, to everyday great inventions that have become commonplace, to getting an education, the world is indebted to Christians. The unbelieving world stands on the back of the believer, reaps the benefit of believers, and makes their complaint against the believer. I just can’t think of all the scientific contributions of Hindus or Atheists. The argument against Christ because of the behavior of a few is flawed, if not ridiculous. Horses have killed people, so will I never own a horse? Electricity has killed people; do I not want electricity in my house? Cars kill people; should I never own a car? Doctors have immoral procedures; I will never go to a doctor. People kill people; I will never listen to another person. The Crusades took place; I will never listen to a Christian. It is really absurd. Why write such an article? It is just polemic preaching telling you what you already believe. Just to make a simple point. The issue is not the Crusades; the issue is pride, and no argument will break pride. Pride is blindness, and only Jesus can break that. Before you ever speak to a proud person, it is pre-determined that you will lose. The only reason for speaking is the revelation of the heart and a coming judgment.

“And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” Gen 20:2

For those of you who are married, what are some of the words and concepts that stir in your mind when you hear the words “wife” or “husband”? When I say that I have a wife or call Betty “my wife,” many things come to mind, for there are myriad issues associated with the term “wife.” I think of the children, finances, the home, the emotional, physical, and mental aspects of our relationship, future and past events, good and bad, commitment, oneness, pains and joys, holidays, babies, ultimate goals, and more. After all, she is my wife.

There is much written on the relationship of husband and wife. However, I want to investigate an overlooked aspect of marriage, that of brother and sister in Christ. This is a greater relationship than marriage. In heaven there will be no marriage, for the earthly relationship of marriage will end on earth. “For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.” (Mark 12:25)

When I look at my wife and call her sister, everything changes. Just as the word “wife” brings with it a multitude of feelings, situations, and actions, so does the word “sister.” She is my sister in Christ; I am her brother in Christ. Those two words, “sister and brother,” move us to a different realm with completely different issues and goals. Once I call her “sister,” I acknowledge that she is not my own; she has a Father and is a member of a family. As my sister we have a goal that goes above and beyond that of a married couple. God is the goal and the desire of our hearts; we must encourage each other in Him. Who did what and said what is not of ultimate importance; He is. All of the little annoyances of the day don’t matter. Earthly mistakes are not the issue. Security is not in finances or who was wisest with the money. Together, He is our goal. When offended, we recognize that we deserve to be offended until we cannot be offended, for of what use will we be in the kingdom if we still get offended? I can’t judge my sister, for, ”Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and stand he will, for the Lord is able to make him stand.” (Rom. 14:4)

There is something higher than marriage for a couple, there is another dimension, and there is a better place from which to relate. Sometime today, turn to your wife and call her “Sister,” or to your husband and say “Brother.” For too long we have only seen our mates as wife or husband, and there is more.

“If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing.” I Tim 6: 3, 4

Do we let people be deceived? There are four issues here. First, we are to confront those things that are false and warn others.

Second, a false teacher can be followed in two ways. We can follow and agree or we can follow the teacher to rebuke. Either way we end up following him and not Jesus.

Third, often false teachers are not creating wrong hearts but revealing wrong hearts. If a teacher gets a following of people when he teaches that Jesus wants us rich, what kind of people are they? What are their hearts for the Lord if they perceive the goal of Christ’s suffering as our wealth?

Fourth, everyone works for us. Let people follow what life will not support, and when they come to the end of themselves, and the end of their trust in others, we will be there to offer Jesus.
