Peru Recovery Park
May 18, 2011 by Betty
There is a small “recovery” park next to the hotel. Went for a walk to lo=
ok around. There were many birds that were captured from smugglers, who=
take them by putting them to sleep and then hiding them in a tube. The=
birds will sell for 2-3 thousand dollars in the U.S. The local that sell=
s them to the smugglers will get $7. The birds here have been recovered=
and released. I saw a two-toed and a three-toed sloth. There was an isla=
nd for the monkeys. One spider monkey has discovered that he can walk upr=
ight and wade through the water by keeping his head and arms above the wat=
er. He does this whenever the other monkeys are picking on him and eventu=
ally returns on his own. Then the bear “with glasses”; I didn’t know tha=
t the Andes even had a bear. This park has a couple and a cub. The mothe=
r only comes out when she hears the water hose running as she likes battin=
g at the water. There are some small “night” monkeys. Also, a small crit=
ter that kind of hops like a rabbit and is prized to eat. Well, I am gett=
ing packed and heading off to the next city. –Mike
